Here's an interesting New York Times article about companies, which are essentially freelance medical librarians. It brings up some interesting issues, including bias and the qualifications of the searchers. While I like the idea of medical consumers having some guidance in the evaluation of medical information, when money is involved there is always a chance for bias. If unbiased, they are probably getting better service than can be provided by an overworked librarian. So now people with money can get better medical care and better libray service?
