I'm a little creeped out by the fact that there is such a rabid fan base for The Goonies. I already mentioned The Ataris' connection. These folks took a trip to Astoria, just to recreate scenes from the movie. There doesn't seem to be the same sort of fanboyism for Kindergarten Cop, Short Circuit or any of the other movies shot in Astoria. Can anybody tell me what the appeal of The Goonies is? I'm too close to it to understand why it would appeal to anybody who wasn't 12 and really excited about a movie being filmed in their town.

Oh how I would love to make a pilgrimage to the store that sells the contents of all the unclaimed baggage in the country. If you can't make it to Scottsboro, AL you can always shop online.

Good thing I'm quitting my state job and moving before Maryland calls it quits and shuts down for good on August 31st. Apparently, Ehrlich actually has a sense of humor.

I'm so disappointed that Ed Furlong was not in T3. I guess he was too busy getting drunk and all. In other news, even a terminator can be defeated by a logical paradox, like all robots.

One of the reasons I rarely read fiction is that it is difficult for me to reliably find novels I actually enjoy. Here are a couple of online resources that offer reader advisory services. Whichbook.net allows you to select parameters such as happy or sad to find corresponding books. Gnooks uses the "If you liked this author, you'll probably like this other author." approach. After you find a book you like you can use isbn.nu to find the cheapest place to buy it online. But of course you'd be checking it out from the local public library, right?

The comics in the City Paper this week had two depictions of librarians. In one the librarian is sexy, in the other, anal. As much as I'd like to imagine that I'm the former, reality is far closer to the latter.

If, by any chance, you were planning on staying in the Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago, please don't. They're workers are on strike. Instead, try the Cass Hotel. It is also close in and cheap, but it's union approved.

Although I haven't had a chance to read it all myself, I am recommending this essay, written by Jared Diamond the author of Guns Germs and Steel. Which if you haven't already read, you should run to your library right now and check it out.
